In the end, only one truth remains: the mad killers will come again — but Lu Kewen will not. A close-up lingers on the narrator’s mild visage: there would have been none for him either, even had redemption not yet arrived. The ending opens; a paper airplane sails across the frame: in truth, redemption never existed — we were cast down into this world.
