Joseph Lampington is shot in the shoulder while fighting for the North during the Civil War. Joseph is then moved to a hospital where he becomes friends with and amputee named Ron Gold, and Ron's pregnant wife Daphne, who volunteers to help the wounded soldiers. The three new friends struggle through the war and through their own battles in a stuffy, crowded hospital.
