Before a person is born, their soul is put through a series of tests to determine whether they are worthy or not to have a strong spirit animal. Grace is one with a pure soul. Max on the other hand was never supposed to be born. He has hate in his heart. When Max joins up with a gang of hunters like him, they have their eyes set on a target. That target is Grace.
