In 1862, Robert Smalls, an enslaved man, stole a Confederate ship and sailed himself, his family, and several others to freedom. He then embarked on an amazing life that saw him fighting for the Union in the Civil War, earning enough money to buy the house he had been enslaved in, becoming a U.S. Senator working to improve life for Americans both black and white.
