In a world where humans live in fear and constant odds with nature, for they are seen as prey by the dominant species, simply known as the Creatures of the Night. The old elders of humanity decided on many rules for the survival of their race. One of them is that unmarried or single men at the age of 21 are forced into marriage, with both husband and wife being sent to faraway settlements to populate them. Such was the fate of Louise Mairot, as he was sent to the Shade.
