After horrifying creatures attack a library, August, Aya, Mars, Naomi, and Pierce become trapped inside a city mysteriously cut off from the rest of the world. Searching for medicine for Pierce's worsening injury leads them to the hospital, where they meet Kezia, the isolated granddaughter of Mack Fossor, whose family journal may explain the outbreak.
